The disposable diaper market is responsible for nearly 10% of all trees cut down globally each year.

It's shocking how dirty most diapers are. But they don’t have to be. Meet the organic, TCF bamboo pulp exclusive to Freestyle: dryer, softer and more sustainable diapers.

A Different Approach
with BAMBOOTEK®

Over 1 billion trees are cut down per year to supply the global disposable diaper market. That’s nearly 10% of all trees cut down annually.

Freestyle is the first brand doing something about this. We wanted to make a better diaper without using trees. Enter organic bamboo, the fastest-growing plant on earth (technically a grass).

By using FSC-certified materials sourced from an organic farm, and producing at an innovative and environmentally-focused facility (more below), we were able to achieve this and more.

It was worth the effort: making a more sustainable diaper led us to a better, softer, more absorbent one.

Diapers just caught a vibe.

Bamboo Pulp

Making bamboo pulp (what powers BambooTek®) does not require any chemical processing. Producing our diapers with bamboo pulp instead of cloth is a more thoughtful usage of natural bamboo materials.

vs.

Bamboo Cloth

Bamboo cloth and rayon production can use one of two bleaching processes, requiring chemical processing. It also shrinks faster than cotton and takes longer to dry, requiring more production energy.

60 DAYS

How long it takes to grow a bamboo plant. Already replaced before your baby is out of diapers.

20 YEARS

How long it takes to replace a tree used to make wood pulp disposable diapers. Regrown when your baby is in college, at the earliest.

Bamboo’s Regenerative Properties

Carbon Footprint

Bamboo grows rapidly and can quickly absorb large amounts of carbon dioxide, effectively reducing greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and acting as a climate change mitigation crop.

This translates into a CO2 drawdown curve that’s up to 10X faster than that of trees.

Water & Filtration

Bamboo requires significantly less water to grow compared to other plants like cotton. The more that gets harvested, the faster it grows. Dense roots form an effective water barrier and are used by coastal villages to protect their crops from getting washed away by rising water tables.

Thanks to this barrier, bamboo can filter organic matter from water (including soil nitrogen), leading some scientists to explore it as a sustainable wastewater treatment option.

Earth Health

Bamboo grows in poor soils and has biodegradable properties. Instead of ending up in landfill sites, it decomposes naturally. This can create a nutrient-rich compost, nourishing plants and enriching the soil.

It offers dense, protective canopies for wildlife, stabilizes soil from erosion, and provides litterfall and fine roots that add carbon and nutrients to the soil.

Why Other Brands Cut Down Trees

Tree-based wood pulp is the standard for diaper production, used by nearly all other brands – both the big ones our parents grew up with and some new, so-called innovators.

Tree pulp is mostly made from conifers – pine and spruce trees. But it doesn’t have to be this way. And what’s more, tree-free options like Freestyle’s proprietary BambooTek® are proven to have superior performance.

Transparency: Plastics in Our Supply Chain

Our diapers are 88% biodegradable. They include a small amount of plastic in the form of spandex, polypropylene and polyethylene in the elastic waist bands (virtually all diapers use the same materials). Freestyle diapers are wrapped in a bioplastic polybag, a fully biodegradable packaging option.

We’re working to fill the gap from 88% to 100%. Freestyle is a certified and audited Net Zero Plastic Waste brand, meaning we invest in paying livable wages for people to collect and remove plastic from the environment, enough to offset any plastics used in our products.

This happens in partnership with PCX, the only fully transparent marketplace for plastic responsibility credits from accredited and audited 3rd party plastic waste projects. From beaches to roads, this means every purchase helps support a cleaner and less-polluted world.

Our Facility

Our facility is ahead of the curve – it is run by solar energy, has extremely innovative water management standards, and is essential in producing what we’d say are the best diapers on the planet.

Solar-Powered

Powered with solar energy, our production facility operates with 30% surplus power, meaning it creates more than it consumes.

Recycled Water

Recycling the water it uses, our manufacturing facility operates a bit like bamboo itself: less water, cleaner inputs and outputs. There is zero water discharge for pretreatment.
